<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I have been working on about a half dozen websites lately and haven't had any time to work on caricatures. Luckily, one of the sites I am taking on is for a good buddy of mine and a caricature may be perfect for his logo.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Jed is a good ol' boy from Oklahoma. He is starting up a BBQ and smoked meat business and wants a logo and website. Jed's Meat Shack screams caricature, doesn't it?</span><br />

Well, last week the world and the bluegrass community lost its biggest star, Earl Scruggs. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiZUMuWU7lkekSnr9CRB3rBgR0d_gjXDstQlX5N4RRHEwRCHkgI-8j4NIC5AdwAqJJe0iOBIYtFfSJzVT7sCwTNgkI2VUNUod4TLSJQl1Au3Rau2VpP_g1keH-WOZj2vCsJFX40B2FxUc/s1600/flatt-scruggs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="145" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiZUMuWU7lkekSnr9CRB3rBgR0d_gjXDstQlX5N4RRHEwRCHkgI-8j4NIC5AdwAqJJe0iOBIYtFfSJzVT7sCwTNgkI2VUNUod4TLSJQl1Au3Rau2VpP_g1keH-WOZj2vCsJFX40B2FxUc/s200/flatt-scruggs.jpg" width="200" /></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It may be argued that nobody has ever redefined the sound of an instrument like Earl did with the banjo. Before Earl, the banjo was mostly frailed using a brush of the hand type <b><span style="color: orange;"><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clawhammer" target="_blank">clawhammer style</a></span></b> in Old Time music which made it more of a rhythm instrument backing up the leads of the fiddle. When Earl put on a thumbpick, two finger picks and started his syncopated three-finger roll it changed everything. Sure other guys were experimenting with similar techniques but Earl brought it to Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys on the Grand Ole Opry in 1946 and turned bluegrass music on its ear. Earl Scruggs has been a major influence on just about everyone who has picked up a 5 string since.</span><br />

</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">He and his buddy Lester Flatt broke off from Bill Monroe's group a couple of years later and in 1948 started up The Foggy Mountain Boys. This is where bluegrass music had its golden age. It is amazing how many of the classic bluegrass banjo instrumentals out there are Earl's originals or at least his arrangements. He wasn't the most technical and didn't play the most difficult finger twisting arrangements imaginable but he was a MONSTER on tone, syncopation and what he called "playing the words". That was the beauty of Earl's playing, it was simple enough that you could figure out what he was doing and you could learn his techniques. Then again, playing the same notes as Earl is one thing... sounding like him is another.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Lester Flatt was a lead singer and rhythm guitar player. He became a bluegrass legend too. His unmistakable voice is rated among bluegrass' best ever and his famous Lester Flatt G- Run is the most used lick in bluegrass guitar. The Foggy Mountain Boys broke up in 1969 and Lester died 10 years later thus ending the possibility of a reunion concert... until now.</span><br />

I was going to do a scene of them in front of the old Martha White Flour bus they used to tour around in or stand them onstage at Carnegie Hall or the Grand Ole Opry. I had rough sketches of their faces done on paper but hadn't scanned them in to the computer yet for inking or coloring. Then Earl died and I thought maybe I could do something different so got right to work on it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This scene took an IMMENSE amount of time to complete. I'm sure any expert will find some accuracy flaws but I worked pretty closely from pictures of Lester's famous Martin D-28 with the extra large pickguard and Earl's Gibson. Their all-white outfits were typical of their style and fit the whole "heaven" theme. I spent a lot of time on the shading, clouds and pearly gates as well.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_7x1ZWk0BOWIjOzUDNy9SdvTO4p4AkADuo7ifJmZ3VyccZjsz3tadSb36R5H8CzYZMr9OhMH3CY8-v-WkPLEgPc2ylzfOgPSjyh6LtqBwOdxmJ4qAFptm6IfwxH6efu6VelVYFuuC5Ro/s1600/earl-scruggs-caricature.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_7x1ZWk0BOWIjOzUDNy9SdvTO4p4AkADuo7ifJmZ3VyccZjsz3tadSb36R5H8CzYZMr9OhMH3CY8-v-WkPLEgPc2ylzfOgPSjyh6LtqBwOdxmJ4qAFptm6IfwxH6efu6VelVYFuuC5Ro/s320/earl-scruggs-caricature.jpg" width="251" /></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The original file is huge. At print quality (300dpi) it is 64 x 72" and almost 3 gigabytes. The faces are the same size I scanned them so are about the size of a sheet of paper. That means I can use the originals for almost any size print but it also takes my seven year old XP computer 10 minutes just to save the file. Everything is in Photoshop layers so I can move stuff around and erase different parts with the click of a button.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So, this is by far my most ambitious caricature to date. It was a good learning experience and hopefully I will be able to use some of the "parts" to make a few more Flatt & Scruggs caricatures "Down the road just a mile or two..."</span><br />

It never is. I usually give up after page 10 or 12 but it is on page 1of "caricatour" so I am eager to round up all of the bad spellers out there to pad my stats.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhb8RSU5Pz4eTJHjH0NgtB1z0op5WI3obzGF96tBAt1RclsL28U6PtpjP5z5fKoPGNrSYwBjwYuUUlBuB3GFKfy60LMxz4GdkmUwFvPCZdz8TpYPIe2T5R-VRzXhyJVcPZYQ0t7XaEdomQ/s1600/hanks.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhb8RSU5Pz4eTJHjH0NgtB1z0op5WI3obzGF96tBAt1RclsL28U6PtpjP5z5fKoPGNrSYwBjwYuUUlBuB3GFKfy60LMxz4GdkmUwFvPCZdz8TpYPIe2T5R-VRzXhyJVcPZYQ0t7XaEdomQ/s1600/hanks.png" /></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">One neat thing I did find during my search this morning is a little website called <a href="http://digibody.com/avatar-maker/index.php" target="_blank"><b><span style="color: orange;">digibody</span></b></a>. This guy (or gal) has a little applet that allows you to choose a bunch of facial parts and make your own caricature. It is not extremely robust and there are no colors but you can certainly have some fun with it. I started out trying to make one of myself but it ended up looking like Tom Hanks. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Head over to <a href="http://digibody.com/avatar-maker/index.php">http://digibody.com/avatar-maker/index.php</a> and give it a try!</span><br />

It is basically a reincarnation of the old game Pictionary for your smart phone, tablet or iPad. The screens are small and using your big unwieldy finger to draw is far from ideal but it is great practice and a most excellent way to get creative. I saw one DS on the Draw Something Facebook page for the clue "APE" which was the final scene of <span style="color: orange;"><b><a href="http://www.movieprop.com/tvandmovie/PlanetoftheApes/planetoftheapes.htm" target="_blank">POTA</a></b></span> where Charleton Heston walks down the beach and sees the statue of Liberty half buried in the sand. Very clever!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Here are a few of the ones I have done recently. Unfortunately, I missed a few good ones as I didn't know how to do a screen capture until just yesterday. Get the app and have some fun Drawing Something!</span><br />

Everyone does a caricature of Donald Trump. He's a walking caricature with his awesome hair and eyebrows, pursed lips and piercing scowls. Plus, we share a birthday so, along with Burle Ives and Boy George, we make quite a team of June 14th entertainers.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I decided to do this of course because the new season of <b><span style="color: orange;"><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364782/" target="_blank">Celebrity Apprentice</a></span></b> has started. I never make it through a full season but I am always there for the premier to see who the next Gary Busey or Meatloaf trainwreck will be. This year I made it through two episodes. It doesn't seem like there are any so-called celebrities interesting enough to tune in for this year. I didn't know who most of this group was anyway. Oh well, I am sure he will have a new season with new celebrities I have never heard of in the fall and I will give it another few episodes.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So here he is, The Donald. Pencil sketched, scanned and digitally inked and colored.</span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13562332900697207221noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5627789758614569143.post-48510866982990849332012-03-12T09:20:00.002-07:002012-03-12T15:15:23.915-07:00Caricature 36/500: Ink Master<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">My wife hates tattoos. I have a small one from 25 years ago that I could take or leave. So go figure that when the new reality show <a href="http://www.spike.com/shows/ink-master" target="_blank"><b><span style="color: orange;">Ink Master</span></b></a> comes out challenging a dozen or so tattooists to compete for a $100,000 prize we are both completely enthralled with it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5ku_sXFg1ljOytZIjS4r42sOMX1xgZIRnVuA4uTOxYXeCbt7MG-29bUhx991eDiK6lKyfb19VT5OO46wUjK1aGk2-Il2-t8-QRjiJ99KzeIqeex5OBaANq6wEcgBYv8Kw3nlQpIprPi4/s1600/Dave-Navarro-600x300.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="100" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5ku_sXFg1ljOytZIjS4r42sOMX1xgZIRnVuA4uTOxYXeCbt7MG-29bUhx991eDiK6lKyfb19VT5OO46wUjK1aGk2-Il2-t8-QRjiJ99KzeIqeex5OBaANq6wEcgBYv8Kw3nlQpIprPi4/s200/Dave-Navarro-600x300.jpg" width="200" /></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Each week there is a new assignment which involves a bunch of random people showing up and drawing names out of a hat for a randomly themed tattoo by a random contestant. The contestants have 5-6 hours to permanently tattoo these folks with whatever pops into their heads for a grade at the end of the episode. The worst tattoo of the bunch gets the contestant sent home and leaves the "victim" with a lifelong story to tell about how they got the worst tattooist on a long forgotten reality tv show. I'd love to see the waiver forms for this production. The people showing up for their free tattoos, some of which quit halfway through from pain or ask for something so big it can only be half finished in the allotted time, are the most intriguing parts of the show. Some of the tattoos were awesome but some were terrible. If you happen to get stuck with the Tribal Tattoo expert when the assignment is Pinup Girl you are totally screwed... for life!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkYqNGGOgPu0oEW6Mhs-4wD_atSULllCSaMh0OHqJFJLEUdYarEaz9KoVNxHe4LJXG8Sx8WWICSuwPCJs7-IbRAjV3FejxmciT9IvimzoqkyQBV1jKQLuIw3BvhsG58uf_s1gYioVI04A/s1600/dave-navarro-guitar-caricature.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkYqNGGOgPu0oEW6Mhs-4wD_atSULllCSaMh0OHqJFJLEUdYarEaz9KoVNxHe4LJXG8Sx8WWICSuwPCJs7-IbRAjV3FejxmciT9IvimzoqkyQBV1jKQLuIw3BvhsG58uf_s1gYioVI04A/s1600/dave-navarro-guitar-caricature.jpg" /></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It is hosted by a couple of expert tattooists and the highly inked Dave Navarro, the guitarist from Jane's Addiction and host of a few other reality competition shows. I'm not sure what qualifies Dave to judge tattoos as his skin is covered with a lot of random bat wings and squigglies but he does a fair enough job of keeping the competition moving and firing people.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The Fair Xty, a "Housewifes of You Name It" expert, says her favorite part of the show is everyone's no-holds-barred brutal honesty. There are no innuendos on this program. If your tattoo sucks, the judges tell you it sucks, the other contestants tell you it sucks and they do everything they can to make you feel like crap for ruining that person's body. They also rake each other over for taking the easy way out or making bad decisions on color use or placement. It all becomes quite dramatic at times.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Anyway, Dave Navarro has a unique look with his long face, extreme eyebrows and makeup so I thought I would work up a full-body caricature of him. As always, I did the sketch in pencil and scanned it it to Photoshop for a digital inking and coloring. I am pretty pleased with the results. My life drawing class has definitely helped with body proportions.</span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13562332900697207221noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5627789758614569143.post-84307343557899585282012-03-09T10:47:00.000-08:002012-03-09T10:47:18.308-08:00Caricature 35/500: The Fair Xty<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4x6VQMm9e2lKMU5zeDI6GvviGu5Ypf4u864dcd-d2Dv0W_Mm0l_mLQss9qpa8gdOkpq1cvTwXbMSbITNZHmQzIxVBnEqiwsD_IpZ6Rs-bS3ZnSZI19spIlDoRfu98AOrUzhO3u8pvwic/s1600/chef-xty.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4x6VQMm9e2lKMU5zeDI6GvviGu5Ypf4u864dcd-d2Dv0W_Mm0l_mLQss9qpa8gdOkpq1cvTwXbMSbITNZHmQzIxVBnEqiwsD_IpZ6Rs-bS3ZnSZI19spIlDoRfu98AOrUzhO3u8pvwic/s640/chef-xty.jpg" width="252" /></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As some of you may know, my wife - the fair Christy - is a great cook and pastry chef.Yesterday she got a new toy in the mail... a chocolate tempering machine! Don't feel bad, I didn't know what that means either. I still don't although for the price it must be something spectacular. The short of it is that it makes the chocolate shiny when you melt it and pour it in a mold to make candy bars and such. Apparently this is very time consuming to do by hand and this machine makes it all automatic. All I know for sure is that the house smells delicious.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">What's the point, you ask? Well she has worked up a bunch of custom gourmet candy bars magically titled things like the "Salty Dharma" and the "Don't Be Bitter, My Sweet". She is kicking around the idea of selling them to friends and family for Easter and asked me to make up an order form for her. I said I would do it if I could include a caricature of her on it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So here you have it... My first full-body female caricature. I sketched in pencil as usual and then inked and colored her digitally with my Wacom tablet.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">She says it looks just like her. If you know her you can be the judge. If you don't you'll just have to take her word for it. If you are interested in the wonderful confections she creates I invite you to wander over to <a href="http://fudgeripple.blogspot.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: orange;"><b>Fudge Ripple Blog</b></span></a> and have a look.</span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13562332900697207221noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5627789758614569143.post-16521046304518048482012-03-07T17:18:00.002-08:002012-03-07T17:19:19.904-08:00Comments are now fixed...<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I haven't had a comment in over a month. I just figured nobody cared but today when the fair Xty tried to enter one she found herself at a dead end. Apparently, the comment box wasn't working correctly. She was able to enter a comment and choose an identity but there was no "submit" button. After some research I was able to change the comment menu to come up as a separate window which now, for some reason, luckily includes the submit button.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I therefore apologize to the thousands of fans who tried to leave me praise over the last month and were unable to complete their submissions. Hopefully the comment section for each page will now work flawlessly. I chose to draw my grandma's baby brother, Great Uncle Bud.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjANxzCnp7oJsKzGFBWDmvYiipotYF1OQc_uNrYSiqo58-pPWtQCcS5YKVEdr-iKWXeit_rIF5tKdhMLkN8KPihma_b4VOO_RiNUwrZhH6bJyKamStBQOYpRV_JuIFmrYh9uy95bc57K8M/s1600/budsmall.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjANxzCnp7oJsKzGFBWDmvYiipotYF1OQc_uNrYSiqo58-pPWtQCcS5YKVEdr-iKWXeit_rIF5tKdhMLkN8KPihma_b4VOO_RiNUwrZhH6bJyKamStBQOYpRV_JuIFmrYh9uy95bc57K8M/s640/budsmall.jpg" width="475" /></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">My grandmother was born in 1904 and died in 1955 so I never met her. Her little brother was born in 1922, just 6 years before my dad. My dad is long gone too but Uncle Bud is still around having just turned 89 at the end of last year.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Bud still lives on the family farm in the house where he was born . He is a widower but luckily has about a dozen children (now in their 50s and 60s) who own many of the surrounding farms and are able to keep and eye on him. He still has a few cows and rides tractors and ATVs around his 200 or so acres.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The picture I used for this drawing was taken at a family reunion about four years ago. We had been on the go all day long and he was just taking a moment to rest against the back of the rental car and think about the hundred or so descendants of his parents gathered around. He is the last of his siblings by over 20 years and the only one to see the family tree's last two generations.</span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13562332900697207221noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5627789758614569143.post-74371267651979764582012-02-29T17:35:00.000-08:002012-02-29T17:35:01.912-08:00Caricature 34/500: Baldwin<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWfh5cULBXR4baymRd2VXKrz5NyYpFt8rDc4-pNDMgM91692mW4_F3sTczKWWl1Ibwut5q4WW132Gut9vKOGmZcATvEdyNBvookrT_YZfTK80JWfaRicj-w75hMApf6faglnpAdR_1Jv4/s1600/alec-baldwin-caricature.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWfh5cULBXR4baymRd2VXKrz5NyYpFt8rDc4-pNDMgM91692mW4_F3sTczKWWl1Ibwut5q4WW132Gut9vKOGmZcATvEdyNBvookrT_YZfTK80JWfaRicj-w75hMApf6faglnpAdR_1Jv4/s400/alec-baldwin-caricature.jpg" width="295" /></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It has been a busy week of freelance work so I haven't had a chance to draw any caricatures at all for a few days. Plus, our homework for Life Drawing Class this week is a real challenge so I will be tied up with it for the next couple of evenings.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Here is one of Alec Baldwin that I sketched up on paper and then inked with a marker. I scanned it into Photoshop and did the coloring digitally with my Wacom tablet. I think it turned out pretty good. The Fair Xty knew who it was which is my main test. </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I am becoming more comfortable with the Wacom tablet and the coloring is coming more easily as well.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This is a short post but the caricature is a decent representation of the style I hope to eventually master. Somewhat cartoony, not too detailed but still bares a resemblance to the subject.</span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13562332900697207221noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5627789758614569143.post-24143015101173038902012-02-25T17:56:00.000-08:002012-02-25T17:56:05.175-08:00Life Drawing Class: Week 4<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Just a few photos of my 20 minute sketches from class today and a couple of homework assignments. Last week was a holiday so there was no class and therefore we had a double homework assignment. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />

I did the nose too big but the teacher liked it. She actually asked me if she could keep it so I guess that is fair enough approval. I sketched it with pencil and then used pastels for the color. This one took me a couple of hours since I did it while the Fair Xty watched a movie in the other room.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The second homework assignment was a self portrait at front or 3/4 view including your hand. It took me awhile but I finally decided a way to use my hand that fits my specific style.</span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">A Person of Interest to me.</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I have some nice caricatures in the works. The trouble is that it takes a while to make the fancy colored ones and I can't keep up with regular posting and get them all finished, especially when I am trying to add bodies to some of the newer ones. Time to throw in a little fodder to hold you over. Here are a couple of quick sketches I did the other day while watching television (what else?). One of them turned out decent and the other did not...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">First we watched an episode of the new drama <b><span style="color: orange;"><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1839578/" target="_blank">Person of Interest</a></span></b> starring Jim Caviezel, the guy that played Jesus in The Passion of the Christ and Michael Emerson of L.O.S.T. Michael Emerson is definitely caricature-worthy. He has close eyes and a crooked mouth to go with many other out-of-the-ordinary features. He also has an injury on the show that makes him appear to have a fused or non existent neck. I initially had some trouble with this guy until I browsed the web to see other drawings of him, so I was influenced by other caricatures (cheated) a bit but he still came out of my pencil.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCOvvrbCaoGK5e9Co-TijNIZbV_WYc66PZj4xHqQbcQ_MbH5n3klODxYWQRwLv34qVneETE50Fn2eXA5f88I-TCi79-vCcK8OArHLZeuz2lhlDI-18Lg-x155qQga_rHJlc1OvP20bFeo/s1600/hetty-ncis-la.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCOvvrbCaoGK5e9Co-TijNIZbV_WYc66PZj4xHqQbcQ_MbH5n3klODxYWQRwLv34qVneETE50Fn2eXA5f88I-TCi79-vCcK8OArHLZeuz2lhlDI-18Lg-x155qQga_rHJlc1OvP20bFeo/s200/hetty-ncis-la.jpg" width="144" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">My apologies to Ms Hunt.</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The second one was a disaster. She seems so unique and caricaturable. I guess I just haven't drawn women enough to get it right. She is supposed to be Hetty from <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1378167/" target="_blank"><b><span style="color: orange;">NCIS: Los Angeles</span></b></a> played by Linda Hunt. I know it is not worthy of blogging about but I can't just give you the highlights of my sketchpad; you'd think I was much better at this than I really am.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I will definitely have to revisit these two with better efforts. Once I reach my 500 I plan to do many more scenes... like the whole cast of a show or team, etc. Won't that be fun!</span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13562332900697207221noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5627789758614569143.post-80790317300892068422012-02-18T13:30:00.000-08:002012-02-18T13:31:24.943-08:00Life Drawing Class: Week 3<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlA9etm2_R_Zxot6pn2su0cHOwC6FFWr9zREyV4GyYKbuUjde9kiB7ugHculXz914hoburIxoxsbm4Grv6HzAvFzE3bMEP-fySQDMJVGtDNObjL_uYrF8SLQVe4MWRTQWnPRTCrzdZJ1o/s1600/sketch+week+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="223" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlA9etm2_R_Zxot6pn2su0cHOwC6FFWr9zREyV4GyYKbuUjde9kiB7ugHculXz914hoburIxoxsbm4Grv6HzAvFzE3bMEP-fySQDMJVGtDNObjL_uYrF8SLQVe4MWRTQWnPRTCrzdZJ1o/s400/sketch+week+3.jpg" width="400" /></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Just a quick post from this week's life drawing class at Pasadena City College. this week we had a professional model sit in. He could sit for 20 minutes without moving a muscle. Compared to the (self proclaimed) pole dancer last week who would jump off the podium to get a drink of coffee in the middle of a pose it was quite a treat to see how it is supposed to be done. The down side was that he twisted himself into a lot of difficult poses.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It was one of those days where my drawings weren't coming together. Most of them were embarrassing to hold up for the class. This one was the best of the group. 15-20 minutes was just going too fast for me.</span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13562332900697207221noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5627789758614569143.post-20925843434041763022012-02-16T09:30:00.000-08:002012-02-16T09:30:49.376-08:00Caricature 31/500: Homeland<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOC14ry5MkRAF4W4E6E83qSaDeP90hiB4szcUQuQBJct7Jl3patPfimsnfsviAYzrECZCmrC-h_OYKQDRs9zwcwdT7KV4j0ejpT2IpoHXWkZOs2pgTSaK9h_q2LGeNQ1bJ4iqxNgqXOf8/s1600/damian-lewis-homeland-caricature.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOC14ry5MkRAF4W4E6E83qSaDeP90hiB4szcUQuQBJct7Jl3patPfimsnfsviAYzrECZCmrC-h_OYKQDRs9zwcwdT7KV4j0ejpT2IpoHXWkZOs2pgTSaK9h_q2LGeNQ1bJ4iqxNgqXOf8/s400/damian-lewis-homeland-caricature.jpg" width="287" /></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I'm a US military veteran. I served with the 101st Airborne in the US Army, one of the most famous divisions in modern military history. Much has been written about the Screaming Eagles, particularly their WWII and Vietnam involvement. One of my favorite books on the 101st is <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Band-Brothers-Regiment-Airborne-Normandy/dp/074322454X/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1329406382&sr=8-4" target="_blank"><b><span style="color: orange;">Stephen E. Ambrose's <i>Band Of Brothers</i></span></b></a>.It is also an excellent 2002 HBO Mini-series starring Damian Lewis as Captain Dick Winters, Easy Company's CO (and eventual Battalion Commander). Lewis does a great job as the <a href="http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=H.D.I.C." target="_blank">HDIC</a> and I was very pleased to see him don a uniform again in last fall's <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1796960/" target="_blank"><b><span style="color: orange;">Homeland</span></b></a> on Showtime.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Homeland is about a US Marine who spent 8 years as a POW in Afghanistan. He is rescued and comes home as a national hero. The twist is that a CIA special agent played by Claire Danes has received a tip that a US POW has been turned and is now a spy for a terrorist group. She doesn't have a name but suspects Lewis' character Nick Brody. The show is loaded with enough misdirection and red herrings to keep the audience guessing deep into the season.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />

It is not overly detailed but captures the subject well and is of the cartoonish quality I want. I emphasized his small mouth with pursed lips, longish face and slightly crooked nose. </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I drew the sketch out for this one and inked it with a marker before scanning it into photoshop and adding the color digitally.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Next, I need to devote some time adding bodies to this latest batch of caricatures and putting together some scenes with backgrounds. </span><br />

I was watching the new Rob Schneider show Rob which is about an average Joe white guy that marries into a large family of Latinos. The patriarch of the family is Cheech Marin, formerly of <a href="http://www.cheechandchong.com/" target="_blank"><b><span style="color: orange;">Cheech and Chong</span></b></a>, the perpetually high duo of the 1970s. I thought I would try out the old Wacom tablet to ink it this time. I found that it was much harder to make a steady line, especially when pressing very lightly to draw a thin one. It also didn't fatten out as much as a pen or marker when I pressed. Perhaps there is an adjustment for that. I would say that inking by hand is easier and more controllable but computer inking is the future so I am going to keep trying. It is much easier to erase on computer, that's for sure.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The coloring is also done on computer and I am finding that easier with each try. This one has a base layer of orange, a highlight layer of white and a shadow layer of black. Simple and quick. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I think if I was to redo this one I would puff up the eyes more to make them little more than slits but otherwise it is not too shabby. Some come together easily like this one and others still don't come at all. At least the days of my 3 hour sketches are over.</span><br />

Last week's homework assignment was to draw a <a href="http://mycaricatour.blogspot.com/2012/02/lesson-11-art-class-or-whats-nude-with.html" target="_blank"><b><span style="color: orange;">picture of your foot</span></b></a>. This week was a bit more difficult... Draw a portrait of yourself.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<a href="http://cdn.dickblick.com/items/219/48/21948-4509-1-3ww-l.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://cdn.dickblick.com/items/219/48/21948-4509-1-3ww-l.jpg" width="256" /></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I had done a few mediocre caricatures of myself but this one had to be on full-size 18/24 paper so no freebies for me. My foot drawing was in full color but I had used colored pencils which proved to be very inefficient on such a large canvas. I decided to head down to the local art store and pick up some pastels. They were a little expensive at $79 but I thought the set of 45 would offer the widest array of colors I might need and Xty can use them too. There were cheaper sets available but they didn't have the variety I wanted and cheaper pastels are more filler and less color so they aren't as vibrant. I have now used them on a couple of drawings and they are very bright and blend well. Don't skimp on pastels if you can help it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3OxMKsT3Evc0tTdvbEgHpaioMjTmgaHFSb-ql66COwvuZnVvTr3tzloXbuzPEt4cSM4rGmONyxlpwkBklzKX_WV-DUmRsdF_sL1n03PFAdffPgBCXe5GHBUoldX-vKWEspjpPIm7lRxg/s1600/Picture-6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3OxMKsT3Evc0tTdvbEgHpaioMjTmgaHFSb-ql66COwvuZnVvTr3tzloXbuzPEt4cSM4rGmONyxlpwkBklzKX_WV-DUmRsdF_sL1n03PFAdffPgBCXe5GHBUoldX-vKWEspjpPIm7lRxg/s200/Picture-6.jpg" width="171" /></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The assignment was for a front facing portrait. This is how most of my caricatures have been so it is a fairly easy pose (compared to 3/4 portrait). I have been drawing in a cartoony style for the last couple of months and it definitely shows in my life drawing. I took a quick shot with my webcam and sketched it out lightly with a pencil. Then i got out the pastels and laid down a base color almost exactly the same way as I did it with the computer in the <a href="http://mycaricatour.blogspot.com/2012/02/caricature-27500-magnum-pi-part-3-tc.html" target="_blank"><b><span style="color: orange;">TC post</span></b></a>. Next came a layer of deeper pinks and browns for the forehead, cheeks and shadow areas. For the beard shadow I used a bluegreen color and then went over that with a colored pencil for the whiskers. Finally, I did the highlights with white pastel and colored pencil. The hair was done in the same fashion. I had to spend a little time on the eyes to make them look round and used gray pencil to shade under the lids and around the teeth to add depth. The shirt and background were just pastels with some shading and highlights for wrinkles and lighting effects. The eyes are too close together and the nose is exaggerated but it doesn't look too bad.</span><br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyhvIHPWIsPGj6jU0FOiP7V387t4x0KSDSfD-KnBjdIdx910bMa_DhMpTtRNXZUEqBMhcFG_UBmrZUsNwe09YoIEDNakkbb2MqL1BevBNQEzDUtJH6vIPsuZ7T8C4yp7KLvTf70S22OgQ/s1600/charlie-sheen-caricature.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyhvIHPWIsPGj6jU0FOiP7V387t4x0KSDSfD-KnBjdIdx910bMa_DhMpTtRNXZUEqBMhcFG_UBmrZUsNwe09YoIEDNakkbb2MqL1BevBNQEzDUtJH6vIPsuZ7T8C4yp7KLvTf70S22OgQ/s400/charlie-sheen-caricature.jpg" width="288" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Here is a quick drawing I made of the Warlock himself, Charlie Sheen. Is it a good, detailed drawing that I spent a lot of time on? Nope but it looks like Charlie and I did it fast, like 15 minutes. That is a far cry from the 3-4 hours I was spending on my first couple of caricatures just a month and a half ago.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">If you haven't been keeping up, The Fair Xty and I have been <a href="http://mycaricatour.blogspot.com/2012/02/lesson-11-art-class-or-whats-nude-with.html" target="_blank"><b><span style="color: orange;">taking an art class at the local community college</span></b></a>. It is live drawing and the poses are timed. That means you have to hustle if you want to get a drawing done before the model moves to a new pose. This makes you commit to your lines and it is the best single thing I have gotten out of the class so far. Just let 'er rip!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Since then, my caricatures have been more confident and have been coming together faster. I still have trainwrecks littering my sketchpad but it is getting easier. I am well into my second sketchbook now and can already see a difference. I can't wait to see what book 6 or 7 looks like. The smaller time investment is making it more likely that I can stick with it.</span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13562332900697207221noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5627789758614569143.post-34231297320431741362012-02-08T08:30:00.000-08:002012-02-08T08:32:34.279-08:00Caricature 27-28/500: Magnum pi Part 3, TC<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>

I tried this one weeks ago but just wasn't happy with it so I tried it again and still wasn't happy with it. Then I decided if I was ever going to finish this I should lean on props a little to make him more recognizable.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I am talking about Theodore Calvin, AKA TC, Magnum's buddy and helicopter pilot played by Roger E. Mosley.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">My first drawing is ok but still too detailed. I need to capture likeness in far fewer pencil strokes to keep it a bit cartoonish. The version I ended up going with is far simpler. While the person itself doesn't look as much like TC, once you get all the props in there is it pretty unmistakable, especially once I lump him into a scene with the other players.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The final version uses digital coloring. I thought it would be neat to show you a few of the steps it takes to get to that point so here goes...</span><br />

"What's Nude With You?"<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So Xty and I decided to take (well, I talked her into it) a life drawing art class at Pasadena City College. Eight Saturdays until mid-March we devote to drawing 5 to 15 minute sketches of nude models.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBEoHPl9q6dUF2hbXY97KcTHbAlI05dSxgnqYD_ctR_Ab9IdozG-QXcpvmV3tILwTvKNjV5pPP7EJxqDRDzVvNuuxV2CXyrpDOHMH7yduQrKkLlRt6NjuWi13uOsH6Zp2sgvHD7Uswt1w/s1600/leg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBEoHPl9q6dUF2hbXY97KcTHbAlI05dSxgnqYD_ctR_Ab9IdozG-QXcpvmV3tILwTvKNjV5pPP7EJxqDRDzVvNuuxV2CXyrpDOHMH7yduQrKkLlRt6NjuWi13uOsH6Zp2sgvHD7Uswt1w/s400/leg.jpg" width="400" /></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It has definitely been educational. There are about 10 of us in the class with the model standing or sitting in the middle of a perimeter of student tables. We do a few warm-up drawings of 2 minute poses and then start on some longer ones. Every time the timer dings, the model faces a different direction and holds a different pose. We are forced to act quickly and draw strong confident lines. From a guy who's first caricatures were clocked in hours, this is good practice on committing to what you see and transferring it to your hand.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The first thing we do when we step into the classroom is to pin our homework to the wall and get a critique. </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This week's homework assignment was to draw our foot including our leg so I hammed it up by wearing a holey sock. </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Once the critique is over, we do our warm up drawings, get a few lessons on perspective or technique and start on our longer 10-15 minute sketches.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjea0MUFCiY7bJAkOocYhuMt2ObSrHVs93S8BVd7K8N3gjmARmmupnZlfTwGDvgTi9rTS58kNXelzXG-3ZGH-7VReqsJrapE5OEUi4YLw8d49YJgCE2jlUJ5qVECPepg4mLN7iuzhbl9zA/s1600/nude3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="285" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjea0MUFCiY7bJAkOocYhuMt2ObSrHVs93S8BVd7K8N3gjmARmmupnZlfTwGDvgTi9rTS58kNXelzXG-3ZGH-7VReqsJrapE5OEUi4YLw8d49YJgCE2jlUJ5qVECPepg4mLN7iuzhbl9zA/s400/nude3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We have had three classes so far with alternating female and male models. Since the body types are always different and the poses are always different every sketch is unique and each has it's own challenges. Sometimes you get to draw the classic "Titanic" pose and sometimes all you see is the top of the model's head. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The instructor keeps telling me my proportions are often way out of whack but I am still capturing the subject well and have a natural cartoonish style. Lucky for me... that's what I was going for.</span><br />

I have been working on a redo of Part 3 in the <b><span style="color: orange;"><a href="http://mycaricatour.blogspot.com/2012/01/caricature-22500-magnum-pi-part-1.html" target="_blank">Magnum pi Series</a></span></b> but it might be a couple more days so I am going to skip ahead/back once more.</span><br />

I seem to have a caricature preference for pathetic nerds. Many are goofy looking and therefore easy to caricaturize. That is my hypothesis but it didn't prove easy in this case. I tried a couple of times.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The first one is a decent drawing, it just doesn't really look like him. I made his face too fat and he looks a little too feminine. </span><br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvvDxotdYQZ_Cfe9Us-iYfD2kIsx5D4zLlcE9cCU_FYLKrSi0taRx8kW0fd83E5PioTH22OljFGPEK9LGqoys7ao-qzJRliE2MMrshZDq_OSDPdd_31xsQWj75YK18xRL2eHtD6qY0QkU/s1600/2.5-men.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="141" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvvDxotdYQZ_Cfe9Us-iYfD2kIsx5D4zLlcE9cCU_FYLKrSi0taRx8kW0fd83E5PioTH22OljFGPEK9LGqoys7ao-qzJRliE2MMrshZDq_OSDPdd_31xsQWj75YK18xRL2eHtD6qY0QkU/s200/2.5-men.jpg" width="200" /></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">For the second one I tried to show the hopeless resigned look of someone who can never get a break, much like his character on TAAHM. He is not that easy to capture. I added an nonathletic body to this one with sloping shoulders which helps to add to his recognizability. I think if I put him next to a guy wearing shorts and a bowling shirt you may be able to spot him in a crowd. I am working on a Charlie Sheen to go next to him so stay tuned!</span><br />
